YOUNG READER REVIEWS

I really enjoyed the book, and enjoyed following Kai and his friends through their seemingly carefree childhood until disaster struck and everything came crashing down. It was heartwarming to read about Kai’s friends stuck by him, despite his desperate and almost hopeless situation, despite the fact that he pushed them away continuously and the fact that he stopped hanging out with them. However, it was very heavy. It details crime, mental illness, suicide attempts, drug abuse and even physical assault. This is definitely not for the lighthearted reader. However, the story was very engaging, and I found it hard to put the book down (I even avoided exploring Paris to finish it!). All in all, I think that Sita Brahmachari did a great job on this book, and although this was the first book of hers that I ever read, I will definitely be watching more of her in the future! I really liked this story and the unique way it was told. The characters were all really interesting and engaging throughout the book. I liked also the present/past changes and how poetic it was. Recommended for teens 14+. By: Niara (age 15). Rating: 4/5.

Description

Kai, Orla and Zak grew up together, their days spent on the patch of wilderness in between their homes, a small green space in a sprawling grey city. Music, laughter and friendship bind them together and they have big plans for their future – until Kai’s family suffers a huge loss.

Trying to cope with his own grief, as well as watching it tear his family apart, Kai is drawn into a new and more dangerous crowd, until his dreams for the future are a distant memory. Excluded from school and retreating from his loved ones, it seems as though his path is set, his story foretold. Orla, Zak and new classmate Om are determined to help him find his way back. But are they too late?

A heart-breaking and poignant novel from award-winning author Sita Brahmachari, for fans of THE BLACK FLAMINGO, AND THE STARS WERE BURNING BRIGHTLY and POET X.
